1. It is important to try to keep to the same sleep routine as often as you can. This should involve getting up at the same time each day. Even if you had a late night the day before you still need to attempt to get up at your regular time.

2. Try to go to bed at the same time each night. Your body has natural rhythms and cycles, if you disrupt these it is much harder to maintain a decent sleep pattern. The time that you set yourself for going to bed should be at an hour which will provide you with a minimum of six hours rest. It should not be too early as if you sleep for more than eight hours a night you will not feel fully groggy the next day.

3. If you often find yourself waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to get back to sleep then you should get out of bed and do a relaxing activity for twenty or thirty minutes until you start to feel tired again.

4. Never let yourself lie in bed worrying about specific events and situations. You will not find any answers and it will only prevent you from falling asleep. If there are problems that you need to think over, choose a time early in the day to do so. If you are the kind of individual that does worry quite often then maybe you could try an activity such as yoga or meditation to help you relax and put your problems to one side.

5. Do not sleep or nap during the day, not even for a short time. This will disrupt your natural sleep pattern and make it all the more difficult to drift off at night. If you find yourself becoming tired during the day then you need to do an exercise or activity to freshen up.

6. One of the biggest causes of insomnia is simply too much caffeine. We consume much more of this than past generations have and most people are not aware that even having a coffee in the afternoon can cause us problems falling asleep at night. You need to avoid all products that contain caffeine in the afternoons and evenings.

7. Once you go to bed you should not do any other activities like playing video games or watching a DVD. Your mind needs to associate being in bed with sleeping.

8. When natural insomnia remedies fail then you can consult your local GP for advice. They may be able to offer you medication that can cure your insomnia in the short time. It is important to be aware that it is easy to develop a dependency on such drugs, which is why they may only be offered for a short period of time.
